Paddleboarding with dogs is one of the most fun ways to get outside, bond with your pup, and enjoy nature together. I get asked all the time how I trained Aspen to stay calm on a paddleboard. Here’s the step-by-step method that worked for us, plus tips on the best gear to make your first paddleboarding experience with your dog stress-free.

Start Training on Land

When I first got Aspen, she wasn’t supposed to do long hikes as a young pup, so I looked for other ways to get her ready for adventures. Paddleboarding turned out to be the perfect low-impact activity to train balance, confidence, and focus.
At 6 months old, we started training for our paddle adventures with an inflatable paddleboard, which was ideal for indoor practice. I did have to keep it inflated in my small studio apartment for a couple of weeks, but overall it was worth it. Aspen wore her dog life vest and was lured onto the board with treats then lured into a down position because I know that’s what would work best when we were actually on the board together. I would get onto the board behind her once she was on too, so she could get used to what it would be like on the water. At first, she only stepped on it when encouraged, but over time, she began to climb on her own and lay down. Every time I saw her do it, I made sure to treat her immediately.

Pro tip: Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, a life vest is essential. It adds safety and makes it easy to lift your dog back onto the board if needed.
Move to Calm Water

Once Aspen was comfortable on land, we moved to calm water. I recommend starting in a slough, calm bay, or lake with minimal waves. For us, Scappoose Bay in Portland was the perfect first outing.
Start with short rides:
1. Keep treats handy for reassurance
2. Use a low dock for easy entry
3. Avoid launching in choppy areas at first
The calmer the environment, the more confident your dog will feel. Some dogs may be skittish at first, so patience is key. Gear That Makes Paddleboarding Easier
The right gear makes a huge difference for both you and your dog:
Inflatable paddleboard: Durable against dog claws and easy to transport - comes with a shoulder strap which makes it easy to carry the board.
Electric pump: Saves time and makes setup much easier.
Dog life vest : Safety first. Handles make lifting your dog a breeze.
Waist leash: Hands-free carrying for the board, paddle, and dog gear.
Backpack dry bag: Keep essentials secure and hands-free.
Setting up efficiently reduces stress and makes your outings more enjoyable.
Protect Your Phone on the Water

Paddleboarding with your dog is an adventure you’ll want to capture—but don’t risk your phone getting wet! I use a floating phone protector whenever we’re on the water. It keeps your phone safe if it slips from your hands, and it even floats, so you can easily grab it.
I used to have one that didn’t float, and trust me…while it kept the phone safe from splashes, it dropped straight to the bottom of the lake! Luckily, it wasn’t too deep, and we were able to retrieve it.
I also love that it lets me take photos of Aspen without worrying about splashes or waves. From action shots to calm moments, it’s a small but essential piece of gear that makes documenting your adventures stress-free.
Tips for a Calm Dog on the Board
Practice patience; let your dog explore at their own pace.
Short, frequent sessions build confidence faster than long, stressful ones.
Reward calm behavior consistently.
Keep early adventures simple—small launches, minimal waves, and easy access points.
With consistency and patience, your dog will gain confidence on the board—and you’ll both have an amazing outdoor bonding experience.

Final Thoughts
Teaching your dog to paddleboard takes time, but it’s worth it. Starting on land, gradually introducing water, and using the right gear ensures your pup feels safe, confident, and ready for adventures. Aspen’s calm, confident behavior on the paddleboard is proof that this method works—and now, we enjoy endless hours on the water together.
